Practical guide · SEO & GEO
Make your business
easier to understand.
Build the foundations for search and AI visibility, with useful content, accessible pages and evidence people can trust.
People may discover a business through search results, maps, reviews or an AI-generated answer. Your goal is to make reliable information about your business accessible and useful wherever a potential customer is looking.
What GEO means in practice.
Generative Engine Optimization describes work intended to improve visibility in AI-generated answers. It builds on clear content, sound technical foundations and credible information. It is not a guaranteed listing or a separate registration that makes an AI recommend your business.
Start with these five steps.
- Make the essentials explicit.
Explain what you offer, who you help, where you operate and how to contact you. Keep those facts consistent across your website and relevant business profiles.
- Answer a real customer question.
Choose a question you often hear. Give a direct answer, then explain the conditions, process or trade-offs. Include examples from your own work where you have permission.
- Support your claims.
Use attributable experience, current details and verifiable evidence. Do not publish invented reviews, results or credentials.
- Check that the page can be found.
Link to it from a relevant page. Ask your website specialist to check indexing, crawler access and whether essential information is readable text. Structured data should match what visitors can see.
- Review real visits and enquiries.
Keep a record of referral traffic and the enquiries it produces. Use example searches to explore how you appear, but do not treat one generated answer as a stable ranking.
What you should not be promised.
No supplier can guarantee that an AI system will cite or recommend your business. Answers vary with the question, system and available sources, and they can contain mistakes. Making your information accessible does not ensure its inclusion.
Choose one service page. Add a direct explanation, three useful customer questions, genuine supporting evidence and a clear next step. Check the page on mobile and connect it to the rest of your website.
Technical notes and sources.
Google states that its existing SEO practices remain relevant to AI features and that no special AI markup is required. OpenAI documents OAI-SearchBot separately from GPTBot, which is used for training-related crawling. Ask your technical specialist to check the appropriate access controls for each system.
